Pro Rider is a Motorcycle Rider Training Course Provider

Mission Statement

  • Our aim is to provide a safe, fun learning environment that will enhance the riding experience of motorcyclists whilst minimising their risks on the road.



Summary of Objectives

  • Provide regular training courses for motorcyclists at all levels of riding experience.
  • Reduce the accidents & injuries sustained by motorcyclists in New Zealand.
  • Increase safety awareness around motorcycling to all road users.
  • Assist ACC & Local Govt with any road safety initiatives.
  • Work closely with motorcycle clubs and retailers to support motorcycle safety



Karel Pavich - Instructor and Founder

Karel is the founder of Pro Rider and has been riding motorcycles on the road, racetrack and off road for over 35 years. In 2006 she became NZs first woman to win a NZ Road Racing championship. She has also competed in Australia, successfully racing modern, classic and post classic machinery.

Karel is keen to share the passion, skills & experience she has for two wheeling, helping others get the most out of this sport in a fun, friendly and rewarding environment. She rides her MV Augusta on the road, trail and adventure rides and dabbles in circuit racing still.

Kevin Roberts - Instructor

There's not much that Kev Roberts or Kev the Rev as he's known has not done on two wheels. He is a seasoned professional who lives and breaths motorcycles and started riding and racing anything with a motor in it, go karts, scooters and bikes both on and off road at a very, very young age nearly half a century ago!

He has an infectious personality and has ridden all over the World in any climate and any condition. Kev is an NZTA endorsed instructor who also has a vast amount of technical qualifications and skills.

Kev gives his all when he is training and is passionate that if students learn the skills through recognized training it gives the student maturity to ride with confidence that would normally take decades to learn on their own.

Kev's, motto? "Riding is every thing, any thing before or after is just waiting




Chris Smith - Instructor

Having ridden bikes all over the world, Chris decided that NZ is one of the best places to be and he moved here permanently in 2007 from the UK. He has been riding bikes for over 20 years and has been an instructor for 14 years.
First qualifying in London in 1999, he became a senior instructor in 2004 and holds some of the highest qualifications in motorcycling (RoSPA, IAM, DSA) as well as being a NZTA Certified Motorcycle Instructor. Chris currently rides an FZ1, Bandit12 and a Scorpio Z




Glenn Berridge- Instructor

Glenn brings with him a huge inventory of skills as a trainer in NZ and overseas with experience in military and high level Security services, 1st Aid & emergency response. He has an extensive background as a Driver trainer in various classes of licence. Glenn is also a work place assessor and class room facilitator delivering N.Z.Q.A unit standards, ITO initiatives and training. He has dedicated most of his life to training and mentoring people and is a very valuable addition to the Pro Rider team. He rides a triumph Speed Triple on the road and is an NZTA certified instructor.




Grant Gibb - Instructor

Grant has been a Motorcycle instructor for many years as well as an instructor of most other classes of licence. He has also been riding for decades and brings a wealth of training knowledge, experience and skills to the Pro Rider team. Grant is passionate about his business and loves working with riders at every level. He is an NZTA certified instructor




Howard Mansell - Assistant Instructor

Howards experience with motorcycling started at around age eight with a ride on the back of his uncle's scooter. His first riding experience started with an MA50 Suzuki scooter at age 14, since then there has been a large range of different bikes and different experiences from commuting, touring, bush-bashing in the hills and forestry, to riding the freeways of America.

Howard has been involved in many motorcycle organisations and major events and is presently the National vice President of the Ulysses Club and one of ten trained rider-mentors in that organisation. Howard has become a very popular Coach due to his riding skills, his love of motorcycling and his enthusiastic but relaxed way of engaging his students and encouraging them to learn new skills. Howard rides both a sport bike and a Harley on the road.




Dayal Phillips - Instructor

Dayal has been riding motorcycles for more than 30 years.
He has attended a range of basic and advanced rider trainings, including full race level training. He has been helping people to ride more effectively for some years. He holds a current Workplace First Aid qualification and is an NZTA certified instructor. Dayal is always willing to share his knowledge and experience to support people to ride more skillfully and effectively. He has a view that it is the "Great Moments" (mistakes) in life where we have the opportunity to learn the most.




Kevin Guthrie - Instructor

Kevin has extensive experience and knowledge in road safety and motorcycle training programmes. He is a very experienced motorcyclist, owns several bikes and enjoys riding in NZ and overseas on motorcycling holidays. Kevin is a Nelson Ulysses member and rides a Moto Guzzi California on the road. He is also an NZTA certified instructor




Jason Howcroft - Instructor

Jason has been riding motorcycles for decades - on the road, racetrack, trails and motox. He has also been working in the motorcycle industry most of his life and is very passionate about helping motorcyclist be safe so they can enjoy riding for life. He has also ridden motorcycles overseas and he is an NZTA certified instructor.




Aaron Carr - Assistant Instructor

Aaron has been riding motorcycles for most of his life and has had many learning experiences on and off the road. After 20 years in the RNZAF as an Aircraft Technician, he spent many years instructing troops how to fix aeronautical components. This leads him well into fixing the Team Air Force Race Bikes, and mentoring the motorcycle riders in the RNZAF. Aaron is beginning to fulfill his desire to move into the field of instructing civilian students, and has a passion for road safety which enables motorcyclists to enjoy riding in a safe environment. Aaron rides a Honda CBR 600 on the road.
