The Basic Handling Skills test is the first step to gaining your Motorcycle Learner licence.

Once you have your Basic Handling Skills Certificate your next step is to successfully pass the motorcycle theory questions at a Driver Licencing Agent.

The Basic Handling Skills test consists of four stages:

• basic turn and stop
• figure of eight and park
• linking figures of eight
• increased speed and emergency stop

Each stage is broken down into varying combinations of the following tasks:

• move off
• straight ride
• corner
• stop
• park

Instruction, Test and Certification carried out by NZTA Certified Instructors.

COST for Basic Handling Skills Course

There are 2 levels for the Basic Handling Skills test

• No prior riding experience or scooter riding only (no clutch or gears experience)

$299 allows for up to 2.5 hrs instruction/practice

• Prior riding experience (clutch and gears)

$199 allows for up to 1.5 hrs instruction/practice

• Practice Time
• Personalised 1 to 1 Instruction
• Learner Bike & Helmet
• Basic Handling Skills Test
• Basic Handling Skills Certificate

We will provide you with 1 to 1 personalised instruction to help you develop the skills to competently pass the test.

Don't have a bike? We supply an easy to ride motorcycle free of charge

Please note: If you require extra time to develop your competency level, there is an additional cost of $100 per hour. It is our aim to ensure you have the skills to be a competent rider from the start!

CBTA - Competency Based Training and Assessment

We are part of the team working with NZTA to develop the CBTA - Competency Based Training and Assessment for Novice riders. This will provide an alternative to the current graduated licencing system and it is hoped to be rolled out later this year. For more info click here
