CBTA is the Licence Assessment option which reduces the time that it takes to get to your full licence (class 6F).

CBTA removes the 6 month minimum time on Learner and REDUCES the time on Restricted to 12 months. Training is not compulsory but with the Ride Forever Program the training is only $20 or $50, and increases your likelihood of passing hugely. Why wouldn't you do it first??

Learner to Restricted CBTA R
Those who hold a Learners Licence can sit their CBTA R at any time, you do not have to wait a minimum of 6 months on Learner Licence to complete your CBTA R and progress to restricted licence.
Successful completion of a CBTA R course during the learner stage will:
CBTA R removes the minimum time period for holding a learner licence (you must still be at least 16 ½ years of age when applying for your restricted licence).
What does the CBTA R assessment involve?
The assessment is designed to ensure that you're competent in a prescribed range of riding competencies.
The assessment is conducted with the CBTA assessor following you on a motorcycle and you’ll be fitted with radio communication equipment to allow the assessor to communicate with you. Your riding skills will be assessed throughout the entire duration of the assessment ride.
How long does the CBTA R assessment take?
The learner stage, CBTA R,assessment takes between 50-60 minutes riding time, which allows for a comprehensive assessment of your riding skills in both urban and higher speed zone areas. Together with the Pre and Post Assessment brief you should allow up to 90 minutes to complete your CBTA R
Do I need Training Prior to sitting the CBTA R?
Although training isn't compulsory, to prepare yourself in the best way possible, it is highly recommended that all applicants undertake a Ride Forever training course before attempting the assessment ride.
The ACC subsidised Bronze course (only $20 for a whole day) is designed to help riders by aligning its training syllabus with the CBTA competencies. This is the quickest way to progress through your licence as it helps you develop great riding practices right from the beginning! This coaching program specifically focuses on CBTA competencies and tasks and supports riders to pass their CBTA Assessment.
Restricted to Full CBTA F
After 9 months on the Restricted Licence (6R) you can sit your CBTA F assessment, however you need to complete a minimum of 12 months on Restricted Licence before you'll be able to apply for your Full motorcycle licence. (6F)
Using the CBTA pathway reduces the minimum time on Restricted from 18 months to 12 months.
What does the CBTA F assessment involve?

NB: NZTA rules are that you may not do your CBTA F assessment until nine months after your 6R restricted license was issued.

The restricted stage (CBTA F) assessment takes between 25-30 minutes riding time, mostly in higher speed zone areas. With the Pre and Post Assessment brief you should allow up to 60 minutes to complete your CBTA F

Note:The CBTA assessment is separate from the Bronze or Silver training course which is a whole day and should be done first.
Allow enough time between the two so you practice and develop the competencies needed to successfully pass your CBTA.

What do I need to do to be eligible to undertake CBTA ?
Before you can start CBTA, you’ll need a motorcycle learner licence and the competency skills to pass your CBTA assessment.
Do I have to use CBTA to progress my motorcycle licence?
No. CBTA is optional. It’s an alternative option to the current testing system for getting your restricted and/or full motorcycle licence and is the ONLY way you can reduce your motorcycle licence time.

What do I do after I’ve passed the assessment?
Once you’ve passed your assessment you’ll be issued with a Transport Agency motorcycle competency certificate for the appropriate CBTA course. You’ll need to present this to a driver licensing agent when you apply for the related licence.
You can apply for your Restricted licence at any time during your Learner licence period.
You can apply for your Full licence after 12 months on your Restricted licence period.
